Dental Puppets

In the spring of 2012 I went to Xicotepec, Mexico as part of a Rotary/UI Service learning project.  A team of seventy people traveled to Xicotepec including a group of pre-dentistry and dentistry students and faculty.  Their goal was to provide dental hygiene education programs to area elementary students and their families.  I helped work with Professor Loyce Arthur’s theatre design students to create puppet performances to use for the presentations.  I performed “The Prairie Flower Lady” for Loyce’s students, talked to them about puppet construction, movement, and manipulation, and provided technical and aesthetic guidance during their studio time.  Below are the finished puppets and stages.
