An annual tradition at Willowwind School has been for students to write, illustrate and bind a book for a partner in the school. I had a chance to work with the students for the first time making these partner books in 2010. The students were extremely engaged with this process. For two weeks they had art every day.
Islam Aly, University of Iowa graduate student from the Center for the Book, came to the school as a visiting artist. UI Art Share sponsored his visit. He shared with students some of his artist books, and introduced a technique to use with their illustrations.
The students created fantastic multimedia illustrations – painting, drawing, and collaging. The students were so motivated to create something special for their partners. I was so proud of their accomplishments — what a fabulous tradition!
